Mời các bạn tham gia đoán nghĩa của từ lóng này:

“He’s a really good friend of mine. He pulls no punches, but I admired that.”
- Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’s daughter, talking about Billy Corgan (of the bands Zwan and Smashing Pumpkins), who helped her with her music.

Meaning

express disapproval without trying to be kind or polite; speak honestly about something without caring about hurting someone’s feelings; criticize something without reservation; make comments on something directly and straightforwardly

Use

You can use “pulls no punches” to describe someone who is always very honest about what s/he thinks. A person who “pulls punches” is a person who says nice things, when s/he really thinks something sucks. For example, if you tell your mom that you love the meal she cooked for you, but you actually hated it, then you’re “pulling punches.” The expression is most often used when talking about someone who doesn’t care about offending people. That kind of person “pulls no punches.”

Examples

“Our basketball coach pulls no punches. If we’re playing bad, he tells us we suck.”

“My dad pulls no punches when he’s talking about my clothes. He doesn’t like it when I wear short skirts or tight shirts and he always yells at me when I do.”

“I like movie critics who pull no punches. I want to know if a movie sucks, rather than hearing something that makes a bad movie sound OK.”

Đáp án thách đố kỳ trước:

Quote

“I tested the waters of traveling with my family last year.”

-Jack Johnson, talking about his plan to bring his family on his entire tour with him this year.

Meaning

tested the waters means tried something out before making a commitment to do it for real

Use

I just recently bought a house. It was a really big decision to make. Before I bought the house, I decided to live in it for a while.

I tested the waters before I actually decided to purchase the house. In my opinion, it’s smart to test the waters before you do something permanently.

A lot of my friends tested the waters of marriage by living with their boyfriend or girlfriend first.
Examples

“I wasn’t sure how my parents would react when I told them I wanted to get married. I tested the waters by talking about a friend who had just gotten married.”

“John wanted a promotion at work but was scared to take on a new job. He tested the waters by helping other people do what they did.”

“I tested the waters of living overseas by visiting a friend who lived in Europe for a while. That way I got to see if I liked it there.”

Chúc các bạn cuối tuần vui vẻ!
